ŁukaszAuschwitz-Birkenau Memorial is the most visited site from Krakow — and for good reason. At just 70 km away, it is an accessible day trip. But planning carefully makes all the difference between a rushed experience and a meaningful one. Here is a step-by-step guide from a licensed Auschwitz educator.
Planning Your Day: A Realistic Timeline
Auschwitz day trip from Kraków takes about 8 hours: 4 hours travelling between the cities and 4 hours sightseeing including drive from Auschwitz I to Birkenau. Here is a realistic schedule that works for most visitors:
Guided / Self-Guided Tour at 12:00 p.m. (example)
10:00 a.m. — Depart Kraków by bus or train.
11:00–11:30 a.m. — Arrive in Oświęcim, get to the Memorial and pass through security (allowed 30 min before ticket time).
11:30–12:00 p.m. — Wait for your your guide in the Visitor Service Center or begin the tour of Auschwitz I on your own with a free entry pass.
2:00 p.m. — Take the free shuttle bus to Auschwitz II-Birkenau (runs several times per hour - the guide explains exactly where it is, when you depart and how you meet again).
3:30 p.m.–4:00 p.m. — Finish visiting Birkenau and get to Oświęcim train station (30 min walk) or back to Auschwitz I for the bus.

Detailed step-by-step guidelines and booking:

Allow at least 30 minutes before your tour slot for security check.
3 Ways to Get There From Kraków
Bus (recommended)
Lajkonik buses depart from the MDA bus station (Małopolskie Dworce Autobusowe) next to Kraków Główny train station. The ride takes about 1.5 hours and costs around 22 PLN one way. Buses drop you off right at the Memorial entrance — this is the easiest option.
Train
Trains run from Kraków Główny to Oświęcim station. The journey takes about 1 hour and costs around 18 PLN. The downside: Oświęcim station is about 1.5 km from the Memorial, so you will need to walk or take a local bus for the last stretch.

Oświęcim train station — local buses to the Memorial depart from here.
Car
Take the A4 motorway west from Krakow. The drive takes about 1 hour in normal traffic (or 1.5 hours avoiding motorway fee). Parking at the Memorial costs 20 PLN. This option gives you the most flexibility with timing.
What to Book Before You Go
Entry pass — Reserve on visit.auschwitz.org at least 2–3 weeks ahead (90-day window). Choose between a free afternoon pass or a paid guided tour. Since March 2026, all passes are online-only — no on-site sales.
Transport — Bus tickets can be bought on board, but reserving at moj-bus.pl guarantees your seat in summer.
Return transport — Check bus and train schedules for return. Last buses back fill up in peak season, however return tickets are not mandatory as it is very easy to come back by train. You may also decide last minute to explore the area.
What to Bring for the Day
You will need your entry pass (printed or on your phone) and a photo ID — both are checked at the entrance.
Also bring:
- Water and a snack — there are limited food options near the Memorial.
- Comfortable walking shoes — you will cover several kilometres on uneven ground.
- Weather-appropriate layers — Birkenau is an open-air site with no shelter.
- A small bag only — maximum 30 x 20 x 10 cm. Larger bags must be left in storage.
- Earphones with a 3.5 mm jack — required if joining a guided tour (audio receivers use this connector).
For more on what to wear and what is not allowed, see the dress code guide.

Lockers near the entrance — bags over 30×20×10 cm must be stored here.

Train (one way) — 18 PLN

6 Common Day Trip Mistakes
- Not reserving tickets in advance — since 2026, there are no on-site sales. Reserve online.
- Arriving too late — allow at least 30 minutes before your tour slot for security screening.
- Combining Auschwitz with the Salt Mines — possible but exhausting. Groups arriving at the same time cause long queues at both sites.
- Not checking return transport — last buses fill up quickly, especially in summer.
- Underdressing in winter — temperatures drop below zero and most of the visit is outdoors.
- Bringing large bags — anything over 30×20×10 cm must go to lockers, which means extra time at security.
After the Visit
Give yourself quiet time. This is not a place you leave and immediately move on from. Many visitors find it difficult to process the experience immediately. The bus or train ride back to Krakow provides natural decompression time.
If you have energy left in the evening, consider a quiet walk through Kazimierz — Krakow's historic Jewish quarter. It offers a different but complementary perspective on Jewish history and culture.
